Educational Leadership in Quality of Medical Practice (QMP) course.

Briefly, my educational history which has shaped my educational leadership qualities are as follows:

  • As the Course Convenor for the Quality of Medical Practice (QMP) unit in UNSW Medicine (2022 - current), I have led the unit in its entirety and personally engaged in a re-vamp and re-structuring of the course content. I have engaged academic staff in all Phases of Medicine, across a plethora of fields in the Medicine unit and worked to integrate QMP and its major component, evidence-based medicine (EBM), into all elements of teaching and assessment. I continue to maintain a conducive, safe, and encouraging educational space that cultivates teaching and mentoring amongst the QMP tutors, as well as engaging students to provide them with a platform for self-development in the field. A major highlight of my undertaking this role has been a reform of the teaching material and the development of a more streamlined, practical, outcomes-oriented approach to QMP, notably the student group projects in terms of Society & Health and BGDB.
  • As a Lecturer at the Port Macquarie Rural Clinical School (2021 - 2022), I was involved in all aspects of teaching the Phase 1 Medicine students, and continually engaged in small-group teaching for the Phase 2 Medicine students. In both roles listed here, I have stepped out of my field of expertise to also provide teaching in ethics and professionalism, of which I maintain a minor role; this has helped me reflect and temper my academic skills to integrate my own personal experiences, resulting in a higher quality of professional and ethical standards to which I hold myself and students accountable.
  • As a Research Fellow at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre (2019 - 2021), I sought minor roles in teaching, both informally and formally to begin a career in academic teaching. In my informal role, continuing from previous post-doctorates and my own PhD, I was involved in teaching of post-graduate and honours students. In my formal role, I was fortunate enough to be given the chance to temporarily head an existing science unit at UNSW, which allowed me to develop a personal philosophy on professionalism, ethics, and safety in delivering high-quality academic material.
