Leadership in Pharmacology Education

Chair of the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology (ASCEPT)  Education Section (2021-2022)

In this role, I have organised workshops and symposium on topics including "Hybrid teaching - the balancing act", “ Innovations in Education from across ASCEPT” and “How do we authentically skill our graduates?”. During 2021 as many of our colleagues were in “lockdown” and working from home I organised monthly Zoom catch-ups where Pharmacology educators from around Australia and New Zealand could join together to share tips and hints for online teaching and support each other through the challenges we were all facing.

This leadership role has given me extraordinary exposure to the innovations and best practices in medical science teaching across Australia and beyond. I have applied this knowledge, as well as my own experience, to guide the SBMS's efforts in the delivery of teaching across the Science programs as well as the Medicine program and the development of the new Health Professional programs

Head of Teaching Department of Pharmacology (2017-2021)

As head of teaching in the Department of Pharmacology I developed a strong supportive teaching community. This included mentoring staff in education practice. I have also developed procedures to support excellence in our teaching delivery including: course exam review committees, annual reviews of each course, L&T presentations at fortnightly teaching meetings and workshops to teach staff how to use digital platforms to enhance their teaching delivery. I provided a high level of support and mentoring to staff at all levels in developing and delivering their courses. I have helped staff develop their teaching, provide technical assistance on online applications and platforms, and promoted innovation in teaching. During this time, I was an active member of the education forum of ASCEPT (national pharmacological society) including chairing this Education section of ASCEPT (2021-2022) and I have participated in international pharmacology education symposiums at IUPHAR congresses, including in Kyoto (July 2018). As an active member of the education divisions of these organisations, I contribute and learn about innovative teaching practices helping to develop my own teaching and pass on what I have learnt to others in my department and school.
