Educational scholarship

I have achieved international recognition for my research in medical education, focusing on eLearning and assessment/feedback, published in leading journals:

  • I lead the Educational Research and Development group in SoMS, which has grown to include 17 staff and students.
  • I have been a Chief Investigator or Principal Investigator on educational research projects funded for more than $4.5 million.
  • My research includes randomised controlled trials (uncommon in educational research), equivalent to well-designed clinical trials.
  • Since 2010, I have 33 peer-reviewed publications (please see https://research.unsw.edu.au/people/professor-gary-mayer-velan/publications for details) in learning and teaching, including in the top-ranked international journals in medical education.
  • I am an invited associate editor for the international Journal of Biomedical Education, as well as an invited reviewer of manuscripts for leading journals in the field, including BMC Medical Education and Advances in Health Science Education.
  • I was invited by OLT to review applications for competitive grants from 2011-2015.
  • In 2012 I received an RCPA grant for dissemination of virtual microscopy adaptive tutorials in cytopathology throughout Australia. Furthermore, my expertise in educational research has been recognised by my appointment in 2014-15 as a consultant to lead a multi-centre trial commissioned by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) (Velan et al., 2015).
  • In the last 6 years, I have been the primary supervisor for 3 BSc (Honours) students, 5 ILP students, 2 MSc students and 3 PhD students. I also co-supervise another PhD student. My effective undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision has been recognised at UNSW by an Arc postgraduate supervisor award.
  • In 2015, my consistent, continuing, high level contribution to scholarship in health professional education was recognised by award of a peer-reviewed Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE).
