Educational scholarship

I regularly engage in educational scholarship of various forms.

  • Research

I co-lead a novel and award winning citizen science program which is breaking silos between research and education and an example of the frontiers of  STEM engagement and data collection for research. Schools Weather and Air Quality (SWAQ) is an AusIndustry funded project for a research grade network of urban meteorological stations across Sydney schools to fill gaps in the urban network and conduct new urban climate research. This project collects high quality data for new research while simultaneously providing primary and secondary schools with access to the data and syllabus aligned lesson ideas and plans. We are currently developing education lessons, analysing the data collected and drafting up research publications.

  • Publications

I publish in research and education. I have published scientific research papers in my area of discipline expertise and I have recently started to look explore scholarly publications in the education space. To maximise uptake and exposure of my initiatives, I have focussed initially on writing in journals and bulletins which have a high readership by practitioners.

As co-lead of the Online Learning and Innovation Community of Practice, I am working with Carol Oliver and the rest of the CoP community on a roadmap of online learning for UNSW  which will cover future technologies, promoting critical thinking and inclusion.

  • Conference presentations

I regularly present at scientific and educational conferences. Eight years ago, I initiated an education and outreach session at the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society's national conference to create a space in the science program for academics and researchers to discuss educational topics. This was warmly received by the AMOS scientific community and has run successfully every year since. I now encourage ECRs who work with me on educational initiatives to lead these presentations.

I am recognised for my advocacy for climate science education and outreach and am often invited to speak or host education and science outreach events. I have hosted, mc'ed or been a panel member for many events, internally to UNSW (e.g., ASPIRE, Faculty of Science), externally at numerous schools and national events including March for Science and Sydney Science Festival.

  • Review

Peer review is an important part of scholarly practice. As a researcher in my discipline I have peer reviewed journal publications and scientific reports and had my own papers peer reviewed. As an executive member of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS), I have also written and reviewed information and governance policy statements.

I have also undertaken review in the educational space. I have informally peer reviewed other's teaching and have gone through formal peer review of my own teaching. My opinion was sought by my colleagues for a review of their program proposal for a Graduate Diploma in Physical Oceanography.  I was also an invited critical friend of the Science Olympiad Exam, for the Earth and Environmental Science Olympiad for selection to International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) on behalf of Australian Science Innovations since 2014; Additionally, I was invited by NESA for curriculum consultation on HSC Earth and Environmental Science, Investigating Science and also provided extensive consultation on the new Extension Science course.
