Improving student report writing skills and assessment

I believe that writing skills are critical for human communication in the modern world, but writing skills generally across Australia have a lot of room for improvement. I took the initiative to create a scientific research writing workshop as part of the OPTM3201 course to help bring the writing standards of our undergraduate vision science students up to an industry-ready professional standard. Students learn about different writing styles and are shown examples of effective and ineffective goal-directed writing. This activity is aimed to improve student writing of scientific research reports that would normally be submitted as part of a deliverable to an industry partner organisation or a publication in a peer-reviewed journal. This has also been useful for our students enrolled in the OPTM7218 postgraduate course.
