I have mentored and competed alongside students in hackathons as a way of extending learning beyond the classroom into real-world, time-pressured problem solving:

• Australian Defence Tech Hackathon (2026): Won with CrowdShield (now Digital Fence), a distributed counter-drone system using passive WiFi sensing — developed with former AWC students who had taken my surveillance technologies course. News coverage (australiandefence.com.au).
• Cisco Korea IoE Codefest (2014): Together with KoreaTech students, we developed a content-aware video compression protocol and placed runner-up. The team was subsequently invited to the Cisco Solution Incubation Program. News coverage (BI Korea). Published paper.
• Other hackathons: Participated with students and colleagues in hackathons organised by LG (Seoul), Intel (Seoul), and Canberra Innovation Network (Canberra).

Beyond competing, I have also served as a mentor and judge at the Seoul Metropolitan Government Hackathon (2016).

In all cases, the hackathon work grew directly out of course content and student projects, demonstrating that the skills taught in the classroom transfer to competitive, real-world settings.
