In both research and teaching, I have pioneered the use of HMD VR to teach students about the concepts of optic flow and presence (how people feel ‘there’ in a virtual environment). Students in OPTM3201 get a hands-on experience to understand the concepts of sensory conflict and how displays can be used to optimise data visualisation. Students also learn about factors that are required to minimise adverse symptoms of cybersickness and disorientation for increasing the accessibility of the technology to all users. From 2023, this will also be used to teach students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Orientation and Mobility about multisensory concepts in human movement.
A WebXR application created to demonstrate the concept of display lag and how it causes experiences of disorientation and perceived scene instability.
