The School of Population Health has many alumni, conjoint and adjunct staff who work in health services and want to contribute to our teaching. I wanted to draw on that goodwill and expertise so that students in PHCM9615 Primary Health Care could connect what they were learning with the experience of people working in the field. In 2020 and 2021 I interviewed 15 experts in integrated care and primary health care and turned the interviews into a podcast series for the course.
Every episode follows the same five questions (though we explore different topics as they come up), which cover the guest's professional history, their insights and the changes they have seen. I designed the five-question format so that it could be used in any course. The episodes are matched to the course structure and supplement the lectures, notes and readings, and I refresh them to keep the content current. Because they’re audio, students can listen in their own time - often when commuting - which suits a cohort that mostly studies around work.
The episodes are hosted on TheBox and were accessed 350 times in Term 2 2023, when the course has around 60 students enrolled - roughly six accesses per student. The series received an honourable mention in the 2021 Scientia Education Academy Exemplary Teaching Awards, and UNSW's Teaching News You Can Use site has a video about it for other teaching staff.
