Teaching context and philosophy
My teaching approach uses the scientist practitioner framework, is informed by experiential learning and is underpinned by UNSW 2025 Strategy. The scientist practitioner approach provides a framework for the integration of science and clinical practice. This approach is suited to teaching critical thinking to trainee clinicians, such as exercise physiologists. The approach focuses on providing trainee clinicians with the skills to be consumers, evaluators and producers of research. Key to this is an understanding of clinical research principles, particularly identification of sources of potential bias, and how consideration of bias can be used to improve practice.
My aim is to inspire students by introducing them to guest lecturers who are experienced senior clinicians and researchers in their fields. Instruction combines contemporary theory and research with discussion of how the clinician/researcher applies theories and research to inform their practice. My aim is to include students as partners in their learning by providing them with opportunities to learn by experience. This approach is incorporated in the design and delivery of HESC3511 Health, Exercise and Sport Psychology
