Expectations and responsibilities

I have been an active member of the School of Medical Sciences honours program committee since 2016. The committee needed a mechanism to increase the awareness of the responsibilities and expectations of both supervisors and students that engage with the honours program. I took on the task of developing a document that clearly set out these responsibilities and expectations, and the processes that are followed if these are not met. By having a single document that provided this framework, referencing the relevant UNSW policy documents, supervisors and students were able to obtain a clearer understanding and know where additional information could be found from the relevant policies. This document now forms part of the agreement that supervisors and students make prior to undertaking an honours project. It has proved to be very successful in providing guidance on intervening where expectations or responsibilities were not being met, and in promoting greater oversight of the honours program that has 70-80 students and supervisors across the School of Medical Sciences and other Schools in the Faculty of Medicine. This document has subsequently been adopted by the Neuroscience Honours program (convenor, John Power), the independent learning project and the honours program in the Faculty of Medicine (convenor, Greg Smith). Clearly this document has filled an important gap in ensuring the quality of learning and teaching in these honours programs in the Faculty of Medicine.
