Impact as an Educational leader: maintained consistently high academic outcomes at rural site

The implementation of Phase 1 Medicine in a setting outside the main UNSW campus was not necessarily widely supported. There were some, perhaps many, who believed that students attending Port Macquarie campus would be disadvantaged in their learning experience. I am therefore pleased to report that my inspirational leadership and teaching across all P1 scientific disciplines, and my mentoring of my teaching team towards the many innovations required to teach effectively away from the main campus facilities, has resulted in four years of PMQ cohorts achieving at the same level as their rural counterparts attending the Sydney campus (Figure). Moreover, preliminary evaluation of data from the first two years of P1 at PMQ—specifically analysing the performance outcomes of the first two years of delivery of the UNSW Medicine program in a regional setting—suggests that the Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of students studying in PMQ is predicted to be >6 points higher compared to students studying at the Kensington campus (research in collaboration with Boaz Shulruf, Professor of Medical Education at UNSW). This initial dataset has been presented at national and international  conferences. We are continuing to evaluate outcomes as more PMQ students complete P1.
