Setting the benchmark for improved remote clinical assessment

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there was a call for improved assessment practices that could be delivered online. This posed a challenge the clinical assessment sphere specifically, delivering meaningful and accurate assessment of clinical skills in the realm of Exercise Physiology. As part of the Practicum Team for Exercise Physiology and in consultation with the Medicine Education Team, we developed and implemented a process for administering the final clinical exams for Exercise Physiology undergraduates - the Objective Structured Clinical Exam and Viva voce. The digital OSCE and Viva provided a means for assessing clinical skills in undergraduate Exercise Physiology students at distance.

The successful development of these assessments became the benchmark for digital skills assessment in the Faculty of Medicine and Health and have since provided the model for Undergraduate Medicine OSCE assessments.

Moreover, this innovative practice was awarded the SoMS Award for Adaptability and Innovation.
