Short audio recordings to support student learning

There is good evidence in the learning and teaching literature demonstrating the impact of audio feedback on the student experience. I use audio recordings in online activities to ‘feed forward’ as well, reasoning that the same impact on the student experience can be gained by providing short audio snippets that provide guidance, insight, or a stimulus to students as they move through the activity. Using the ‘Record Audio’ feature on the Atto editor, it is possible to insert short audio recordings (max. two minutes) in any Moodle asset that can be edited with Atto. For example, lessons, quizzes, pages and assignment descriptions. It provides a personal connection to the students, conveying your emotion and intention through the tone and nuance of the recorded message. It is a simple and flexible feature that can enhance the online student experience.

A short video illustrating how I use audio recordings in an online practical lesson. The audio recordings are placed at key places throughout the online lesson, providing guidance and stimulus along the way, a little like the audio tour you might take at an art exhibition.
