Teaching context and philosophy

Since my appointment as Head of the Discipline of Critical Care in 2022, I have dedicated myself to advancing medical education through innovative curriculum design, comprehensive assessment strategies, and support systems for students. My career has been characterized by a commitment to fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment where all students can thrive.

I believe that effective education combines rigorous academic standards with a student-centered approach that recognizes the diverse learning needs of all students. My philosophy emphasizes the importance of independent learning and critical thinking, enabling students to synthesise knowledge and communicate effectively in clinical settings. I aim to be a facilitator of learning rather than a mere transmitter of information, encouraging students to take ownership of their educational journeys.

Currently, I am focused on enhancing critical care education through a series of innovative programs. The introduction of a new curriculum for Phase 3 students in 2023, along with a variety of assessments—including end-of-term vivas —reflects my commitment to ensuring that students are prepared for their assessment and workplace. Furthermore, I have implemented eight online modules to facilitate flexible learning, which not only supports asynchronous learning but also instills a lifelong habit of independent study.

I also launched the Medical Education Enhancement Training (MEET) program to support students needing extra assistance, helping them meet expected learning standards. I have developed an Artificial Intelligence Virtual Patient (AIVP) program with education and immersive technology specialists and it is aimed at improving students' synthesis and communication skills, allowing them to better simulate clinical scenarios.

In summary, my career achievements and ongoing initiatives demonstrate my passion for enhancing medical education. By integrating evidence-based methods, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuously refining assessment strategies, I am committed to ensuring that students in the Discipline of Critical Care receive the high-quality education they need to succeed in their future medical careers.
