The Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) is a joint organisation with the Australian Diabetes Educator Association (ADEA) which co-host the Australasian Diabetes Congress annually. As a casual academic in the field of Pathology, this society provides an excellent opportunity to not only remain current with the pathology, presentation and complication of diabetes but also highlights the barriers in communicating these ideas to the wider community. I believe I have been able to employ this knowledge and experience into my teaching where I attempt to find innovative techniques to convey complex information in a digestible form. While students should remember information, they most importantly must understand it. Often basic science is thought of as a separate entity to education, however with societies such as ADS these fields are becoming significantly more integrated.
