At UNSW we recognise that students are entering medicine from diverse high school backgrounds. The Biology and Chemistry Bridging modules are designed to promote equity of knowledge and give students confidence that they have the same foundational knowledge in these disciplines as their peers so that they can be confident engaging in collaborative learning without worrying that they are not starting at the same step 1 as their peers.
In conjunction with nephrologist Dr Jonathan Erlich I have developed Chemistry Bridging modules to allow students to learn foundational chemistry concepts in a clinical context. I have developed the following modules: Acids and Bases, Common Calculations In Chemistry, Measurements, Ions and Ionic Compounds, Chemical Bonds, Energy, Redox Chemistry, Oxidation and Reduction, Organic Chemistry, Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress, Lipids and Solubility.
The creation of these modules was particularly important to me as Phase I Lead of a rural campus given a rural high school education is associated with socioeconomic disadvantage, with students often being the first in their family to attend university. It was therefore important to me create learning supports that help 'even the playing field' for these students.
