In 2021, I played a key role in pioneering a proactive strategy to enhance student wellbeing for Phase 1 students at PMQ-RCC, through the inception of the Student Wellbeing @ Port (SW@P) program. As part of this initiative, I ensured that each student was matched with a SW@P facilitator (member of the Phase 1 faculty) with the objective of building a strong, supportive relationship and providing a dependable point of contact over two years. Through this personalised approach to pastoral care I addressed each student’s unique needs, helping them to develop bespoke strategies to address academic challenges. This included equipping students with techniques to enhance their study habits, time management, and academic performance, assisting them in setting and achieving their educational goals. I provide a safe contact point for students, guiding them to academic and personal support services within UNSW and externally.
“The SWAP meetings ...helped, as they were a platform to discuss what was occurring in my life, and made me realise that I was in good control of or needed to improve my mental and physical health.” (2021)
Beyond academic support, I also provided emotional guidance during times of personal crises or academic setbacks. My involvement has supported students through various mental health and other crises, undoubtedly helping them to persist and maintain their academic trajectory. My aim is to create a safe and welcoming environment for students, where they can focus on engagement in their university experience with structured support, especially during transitions or periods of stress.
Though we have not yet formally evaluated the initiative, feedback from students has indicated that they greatly value the regular contact with a faculty member, affirming the positive impact of this initiative on their wellbeing and further validating our strategic approach:
“The support from the staff at the rural campus was amazing and I was able to build a relationship with them and feel very comfortable. Overall there was so much support … it made the transition from high school to university easier.” (2023)
The SW@P program's pioneering approach and effectiveness garnered our teaching team the prestigious 2023 UNSW Teaching Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Wellbeing, underscoring the significant impact of our unified efforts to enhance student success and wellbeing.
