Facilitator • Course Design Institute

I was a facilitator at UNSW Engineering's inaugural Course Design Institute (CDI) in 2018. Initiated by Dr Alex Bannigan, CDI is an intensive workshop that guide participants through the instructional design (or re-design of their course). As a peer facilitator, my role is to step a small group of academics on how to apply the following approaches to their course design over a period of 5 days.

  • Use backward and integrated design principles to analyse and identify situational factors that affect their course;
  • Use learning taxonomies to formulate their course's learning objectives;
  • Develop course content that aligns with learning objectives;
  • Articulate, justify and apply evidence-based pedagogy and student-centred instructions;
  • Develop formative and summative assessments that map to the learning outcomes;
  • Engage in metacognitive reflection of learning and teaching; and
  • Foster relationships and a sense of belonging as a teaching academic at UNSW

As this was the first time CDI was held, UNSW consulted with Dr Cara Meixner, Executive Director of James Madison University's Center for Faculty Innovation, about the curriculum. At the end of the CDI program, I reviewed and provided feedback on the participant's course contents, activities and assessments aligned with the learning outcomes. As this is the inaugural CDI, I also provided feedback on how to adapt the curriculum and activities for future CDI programs. I also promoted CDI to colleagues through Yammer and word of mouth. CDI is now an institution-wide program with more than 120 staff participants (and growing!) after 5 years.
